Lord George Gordon Byron married Annabella Milbanke, daughter of Sir Ralph Milbanke at Seaham Hall in 1815. He was the most prolific and controversial of the English poets. Aristocrat, rake and revolutionary, he is celebrated as much for his exploits and good looks as he is for his poetry. Byron lived for the life of the senses, declaring as much when he said. “The great object of life is sensation, to feel that we exist – even though in pain”. Author of ‘Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage’ and ‘Don Juan’, he was a literary star of a kind never seen before. ‘The Corsair’ of 1814 sold 10.000 copies in a single day, a feat seldom achieved by a novel, let alone a book of poetry. It still holds the record for a book of poetry sold in such a short time. Surrounded by well manicured gardens with stunning sea views Seaham Hall and the Serenity Spa is beautifully placed on a rugged clilff top. Take a stroll around our 36 acres including the gardens and stunning terraces with lily ponds. Perched on the edge of the North Sea and surrounded by some of the wildest, most beautiful countryside in the land. Seaham Hall is just three hours from London by train, and a good deal less if you fly. (We’re close to two international airports: Newcastle and Teesside.) Major roads make easy work of reaching the landmarks, treasure houses and natural wonders of northern England and Scotland. To the north, Scotland’s two great cities, Edinburgh and Glasgow are within easy striking distance, as is York to the south (an hour’s drive away). Hadrian’s Wall is even closer and Durham, with its Norman cathedral, a world heritage site, is only twenty minutes away. A short drive north takes you to Newcastle, legendary for its nightlife, clubs and restaurants and voted one of the top ten most fun destinations in the world. Why not visit our restaurants Treacle Moon and Fisherman’s Lodge when you’re in town? To the west is the Lake District National Park. Its jaw-dropping mountain scenery has inspired both reams of poetry as well as that primal urge to lace up your boots and walk. Who knows? You may want to investigate The Samling, our country retreat by Lake Windermere, while you're there. • Interior style / dcor The work of painters Dale Atkinson, Ørnulf Opdahl and Paul Gallagher feature large on the walls of Seaham Hall, where a sizeable collection of contemporary art from the North East and Norway is evolving. Sculpture is equally well served. The works of Nicolaus Widerberg, Andrew Burton and William Pye (the water vortex at the front of the hotel is his) can be seen dotted around and sometimes even moving through Seaham Hall. Stained glass artist Bridget Jones has created a complete ceiling based on Byron’s poetry, in the Atrium.
